How do I change the headlights on my 99 Dodge intrepid??

They are relly dim. The outside of my headlights are scratched up and really foggy I think that has a little to do with it. But i want brighter lights as well. Do this to both of them. Most likely its moisture built up.....coming in from some kind of leak in your grill. once you wipe it out and seal it real good. It shouldn't happen again...You cannot upgrade headlights as far as I know. Your electrical system will only allow whats right for THAT car. Nothing more. However, sealing it up should work once you clean the bulb out. To do this, under the hood on the battery side and the opposite side. where the headlights are...you have hologen bulbs that pop out quite easily. They are probably NOT your problem. You problem is in the frame of the headlight itsels. So you take out a couple bolts, maybe a little of your grill...and you remove the assemble and check it...See if you can tell how the air and moisture. If you can't fix it by sealing it...then replace the whole assemble. It would cost about 30.00 per light. Incluing the bulbs, so its really not that bad. Roughly...Don't go to Dodge to buy it or anything else. Go to Auto Zone, or ANYWHERE else....But NOT the dealer. When you put it back in...drive it up to a wall....using the screws that are on it...adjust your headlights accordingly. Using the screwdrive to adjust the lights to make sure you have them aimed correctly. THAT is very important..To be up to a wall...garage door...anything that you can see the lights images as you adjust them.

The yellow fog should buff off fairly easily. Worth a try and works 9 out of 10 times. However, most will sell only the whole thing which is what I recommend anyway. Look on eBay for the cheapest there are a few companies on there that sell brand new assemblies for cheap.

Ok, took all of 10 min. and that included going into the garage to get my socket set. Lights are held in with two 6 or 7 inch long bolts 9/32 socket to get them out. Unplug the sockets from back of light and swap them out.

The sun breaks down the plastic in your headlight housing. The housing will have to be changed and they are not cheap. youll most likely have to go to a dealer and buy the product. Once you have the housing they are not super hard to figure out. open the hood, on the back of the headlight assembly, there is a plastic cover, retained by a plastic clip, carefully remove this cover, then unplug the back of the light, remove the retention ring by turning it about 30 degrees, remove the bulb. install is reverse, but be careful not to touch the glass of the bulb with your fingers, as it will burn it out a lot sooner.

It is a special molded piece that is only available through Toyota. They are extreamly expensive to replace. The Foggy ness is generally from being parked in the sun. The sun breaks down the plastick and will make it foggy and m,aybe yellowish. The cheap alternative to replacing this part (that costs $100+ to replace) is to take a rubbing compound and buff the whole front of the lense. this will take off the fogg area (with alot of elbo grease).

Pulling up on this clip disengages the headlamp assembly therefore allowing you to remove it and then you can access the bulb.

Note: there may be 2 of these clips. Note: do not remove these clips. Only pull them up enough so that a release click can be felt

They should be just infront of the metal crossmember that runs from fender to fender.

-Open the hood.

-Remove the front air deflector. (plastic cover over headlamp)

-Apply light pressure to the headlamp lens to hold the headlamp in place while disconnecting the retainers. (press against)

-Lift up the headlamp retainers to release. IMPORTANT: Note the location and position of the headlamp adjuster retainers and the locator tab.

-Remove the headlamp, pulling straight forward from car

-Rotate the headlamp bulb/socket(s) counterclockwise to release. Remove the headlamp bulb(s).



Installation just go back up the list.

The clips retain the bulb in a headlight socket and are located behind each headlight assembly under the hood. One more important thing you need to know. never, and i mean never touch any part of the glass bulb with your fingers. The oil from your skin will create a hot spot on the bulb and it will burn your new bulb out in a short period of time. If you go to an Auto Zone, you may find the bulb for about $9 and the counterperson can probably install it for free, or at least show you where it is located and how to replace it from there.
